Mma tracker danaher Mma tracker danaher. John Danaher (born 1967 in Washington, D.C., United States) is a New Zealander Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts instructor. He holds a 4th degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Renzo Gracie, and is an instructor at the Renzo Gracie Academy in Manhattan. Although born in the United States, Danaher grew up in New Zealand, until arriving in the United States in 1991 to study at.
John Danaher has been known to mentor a lot of great athletes, some of the famous ones being Gordon Ryan, Garry Tonon, Eddie Cummings, Travis Stevens, Tom DeBlass and the MMA legend, Georges St-Pierre. The EBI was a prominent point for Danaher and his team, his Death Squad, as they showed great promise in their Jiu-Jitsu techniques when competing in the tournaments.
With Renzo Gracie being their academy coach, Danaher and his team made a name for themselves after their journey in the EBIs. One particular match between Garry Tonon and Eddie Cummings showed the people their knowledge about tremendous leg locking skills, most people would not have any idea of what these guys were doing at all. That’s when the interest in ground BJJ, specifically leglocks entered the spotlight with Danaher and his Death Squad being the pioneers. It is also safe to say that they had a huge influence on the grappling aspect of MMA as well.
Danaher’s team members, Tom DeBlass and Travis Stevens have also released their own great instructionals like nutrition programs and fundamentals of BJJ that have some influence from their mentor.

About John Danaher’s DVDs
John Danaher first announced on his Instagram that he will be making a new DVD series for reaching a wider audience. He said that for the last 24 years he has been teaching in his mentor’s Dojo, the Renzo Gracie Academy and has been only able to train people in front of him. When his DVD was released, he was able to reach a wider audience and had a huge influence on the people around the world as he was previously unable to do with so much impact when he had either his Dojo classes or seminars.
There were also the issues when people would ask John Danaher to come and teach them but he couldn’t as he was too busy with the progress of his students in the Dojo and could not prioritize others. It was even worse for people abroad as John could not travel a lot because of problems in his body. During that phase he got his knee replaced and before that, he had gotten his hip replacement. It became evident that things were not looking good for him and he was not sure if he could demonstrate the BJJ moves either. The only option was to come to attend his classes at the Dojo or wait for a seminar.
The good news is that his students were able to perform the moves taught by Danaher throughout various competitions, either local tournaments or around the world like EBI etc.

Together with Bernardo Faria and Michale Zenga from BJJ Fanatics, John Danaher produced this DVD series. The content on the DVDs was divided into two systems, one told us about the Ashi Garami leg locking system and the other about Back Attacks. It is worth mentioning that this was the first ever DVD series by John Danaher, so you if you have not looked into it you are missing out.
As mentioned before, the purpose of these DVDs being produced was because Danaher being unable to travel or reach a wider audience but he also mentioned that Bernardo Faria, multiple times World Champion pushed him to do it.
Both of the DVD segments were filmed in the basement of BJJ Fanatics and are described as a marathon session that will be long and very informative. The first part, covering Ashi Garami, told us the full concept of this move and about leg attacks. The second laid emphasis on back attacks and gave some insight on the philosophy, tactics, and techniques of all kinds. Danaher also demonstrated everything that his students were taught and their executions in the competitions and seminars over the years. The reception was well received and people were eager to see more. Danaher said that he will continue working together with the people from BJJ Fanatics and give more as long as the success retains itself.
The lessons given in these DVDs aimed to reveal new techniques or raise some good athletes, as they could probably change the direction that BJJ is heading with new information on the leg locks and what the Danaher Death Squad was taught all these years.
Though before this, great athletes like Craig Jones influenced Danaher to go for leg locks training and his instructional came really close to the Danaher Death Squad leg locking system. Craig Jones’s was very influenced by the DDS leg attack system and their representations in tournaments.

John Danaher emphasizes the importance of learning new skills to your BJJ arsenal. He says that he always does that with all of his students, whether they have been training under him for a long time or just joined. He told us how some athletes are able to learn and follow the same set of moves for years and when they incorporate new ones it refreshes them. They get bored and predictable with the usual moves but learning new ones gives them perspectives, skills that they can play with in addition to what they already know and be happy that they earn this achievement.
That is exactly what John Danaher wanted to teach you in his DVD. He gave us an example of his student Tom DeBlass, a great athlete who was very skilled and was able to learn new stuff. With his already existing skill set and the capability of incorporating more skills in his game, he was able to win many competitions like ADCC, US trials and even compete in World Championships. One such example of his feats could be seen in the Fight to Win pro tournament in Philadelphia where he was fighting in an inside position but did a Kuzushi to throw his opponent off balance and finally locked him with a perfect heel hook. You could see the perfect execution of his moves with a surprising duration of 30 seconds!
Another thing that Danaher tries to get across is that it is not necessary to follow a system early or from the beginning of your BJJ career as many of his successful athletes came to him later and had been training somewhere else before. Even though he had been trying to teach them his ways of fighting, this is exactly what he planned to do with his DVD instructional.

John Danaher (born 1967 in Washington, D.C., United States) is a New Zealander Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts instructor. He holds a 4th degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Renzo Gracie, and is an instructor at the Renzo Gracie Academy in Manhattan.[1] Although born in the United States, Danaher grew up in New Zealand, until arriving in the United States in 1991 to study at Columbia University's philosophy PhD program. After arriving in New York, Danaher was introduced to Brazilian jiu-jitsu by a friend at the university, and began taking classes at Renzo Gracie's academy in Manhattan.[2] He continued training at the academy and began to teach classes as well while Gracie was traveling for competition. Since receiving his black belt in the early 2000s, he has been an instructor for several notable jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts competitors.
Early life and education[edit]
John Danaher was born in Washington, D.C., United States. His father, a pilot in the New Zealand air force, acted as an attaché to the United States military during the Vietnam War. His family later returned to Whangaparaoa, a small peninsula north of Auckland, New Zealand, where Danaher spent the remainder of his childhood.[2] He also learned kickboxing, and some karate as martial arts were becoming popular in New Zealand.[3]
After high school, Danaher attended the University of Auckland, where he earned a Bachelor's, and later a master's degree in philosophy. In 1991, he returned to the United States to pursue a Ph.D. in epistemology at Columbia University in Manhattan. While attending the university, Danaher worked as a bouncer at various Manhattan night clubs.[3]
Martial arts career[edit]
While he had some striking ability from his time in New Zealand, Danaher's dedication to martial arts did not fully begin until he began training at the Renzo Gracie Academy in the early 1990s. While there, he studied under legendary jiu-jitsu practitioner Renzo Gracie, and became one of his most dedicated students, alongside Rodrigo Gracie, Matt Serra, and Ricardo Almeida.[3] As a purple belt, he began to teach some classes at the academy while Renzo was traveling to compete in mixed martial arts competitions. Over the next several years, with many of his peers leaving to start their own academies, Danaher's responsibilities as an instructor at Renzo Gracie Academy grew, and Danaher became a full-time instructor at the school.[3]
Being that Danaher has suffered throughout his life from severe leg and hip problems, he has never competed professionally, and as a result has devoted his time and effort to teaching. As his students have had success in competition and gained notoriety over the last several years, he has become well known as a jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts coach, having worked closely with fighters such as Georges St-Pierre and Chris Weidman.[4][5] Additionally, he coaches a group of notable jiu-jitsu competitors at Renzo Gracie Academy, often referred to as the 'Danaher Death Squad.' The group includes athletes such as Gordon Ryan, Garry Tonon, Nick Rodriguez, and Nicky Ryan (Gordon's younger brother), who between them hold numerous world championships, spanning multiple organizations, including IBJJF, ADCC, Eddie Bravo Invitational, and others.
Since 2018, Danaher has been a member of Sanabul, a combat sports brand, serving as a brand ambassador and consultant. Additionally, John Danaher is partnered with BJJ Fanatics for the release of his two series of instructionals, the 'Enter the System' series and the 'Go Further Faster' series.
In late 2020, Danaher announced that he would be leaving his permanent teaching position at Renzo Gracie's New York Academy and would be moving to Puerto Rico to establish a new gym with some of his top students at the time.[6] Gordon Ryan later revealed that a tentative opening date for the new academy was set for March 2021.[7]

Leg lock system[edit]
Danaher is also known for developing his own system of leg-locks and lower-body attacks.[8] He was first introduced to the effectiveness of leg locks when Dean Lister, an American grappler who was having success in competitions utilizing leg-based attacks, came to train at Renzo Gracie Academy for two weeks in the early 2000s.[9] With the leg lock system, Danaher was able to consolidate a large number of distinct positions and moves into a more formulaic and predictable series of procedures that could be executed by his students. Using the principles that Danaher set out in his system, his students had tremendous success utilizing leg locks in competition.[10][11][12]
Danaher is credited with helping to alter the jiu-jitsu community's opinion of leg locks, as many saw them as a non-technical and ineffective method of attack before Danaher's students demonstrated their usefulness in competition.[13] Danaher has since developed systems for various types of arm attacks (notably Kimura variations and Armbars), back and rear strangle-based attacks, Front Headlock and guillotine attacks, and Triangle attacks as part of his 'Enter the System' series. Most recently he has published beginner-oriented DVDs under the name of the 'Go Further Faster' series; the topics covered thus far include Half Guard, Guard Passing, Closed Guard, Pin Escapes, Guard Retention and Open Guard. The next DVD in the series is expected to cover passing Half Guard as well as Dynamic Pinning concepts.[14][15]
Health problems[edit]
Having been born with deformed patellas, Danaher was prone to knee injuries throughout his early years. In the 1980s, Danaher suffered a severe knee injury to his left leg while playing rugby, which required surgery.[16] The result of multiple surgeries on his left knee was artificially shortened and deformed ligaments, which drastically inhibited Danaher's ability to properly extend and retract his knee. Over the years, this imbalance proceeded to cause other problems for Danaher. Namely, an unbalanced gait caused Danaher's left hip to be subjected to undue force and strain, leading to severe osteoarthritis. The damaged hip ultimately required a replacement surgery, which Danaher underwent in 2015.[17]
TV and film appearances[edit]
In 2017, Danaher appeared in four episodes of the Showtime series Billions, in which he portrays the jiu-jitsu instructor of U.S. Attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti).[18] In 2012, he appeared as himself on the Spike TV series MMA Uncensored Live episode “King Mo Reigns”.[19]
In 2015, Danaher co-starred in the documentary 'Jiu Jitsu vs the World' alongside renowned Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners Eddie Bravo, Renzo Gracie, and Roberto Abreu, among others.[20]
