Follow the instructions that came with the scanner to unpack it and connect it to your Mac. If your Mac has a single USB-C port, and you want to connect a USB scanner, use a multiport adapter. Connect the scanner, then connect a USB-C cable to a power supply to prolong the battery life of your Mac. See About USB-C. Update printer software on Mac. Most printers are compatible with macOS. When you add a printer, macOS automatically uses AirPrint to connect to the printer or downloads the printer’s software (also called a printer driver).

See the following from https://support.brother.com/g/s/id/os/macintosh.html
Control Center Brother Printer
The Brother ControlCenter2 is not supported by macOS v10.15.
Use the Brother iPrint&Scan as an alternative function.
That can be downloaded from https://help.brother-usa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/150551/~/download-and-install-brother-iprint%26scan---windows-or-macintosh-computer
I have a Brother Printer Scanner but I don't have personal experience using the above as I use Apple's Image Capture instead.

Brother Scanner Driver Mac
2017 MacBook Pro OS 10.12.5 and Brother printer/scanner MFC-8890DW. I have installed the appropriate driver from the Brother website, but the scanner button / function is not present for this printer in the Printers & Scanners window (it was present with previous OS). I can use Brother Control Center that I installed, but it is cumbersome and sub-par to the Mac Printers & Scanners app. How can install the scanner driver for this printer in the Printers & Scanners app? Help appreciated.
